John Christopher “Chris” Spence worked with his father Wilmer Spence in the construction and apartment rental businesses from 1974 until founding J.C. Spence Company, LLC in 1984.
Starting with a forty-nine unit apartment complex in the Spring Valley area of Huntington, he fostered a relationship with the Marshall University School of Medicine as a preferred provider of housing for the medical students. Continuing the same efforts with the Marshall University School of Forensic Science and more recently the School of Pharmacy, the company split off into a new company solely intended for this niche market called Park Place Properties, LLC in 1998.
Park Place Properties continued to expand by offering short-term housing to medical professionals working at various area hospitals. The company was able to develop relationships with the housing placement companies across the country. Given its close geographical proximity to the Huntington VA Medical Center, Park Place has also been very fortunate to provide housing for many of the hospital’s employees.
The original J.C. Spence Company has long been a leader senior housing in Huntington with some residents exceeding 40 years of residency. In the fall of 2013, the decision was made to merge the two companies into Park Place Properties, LLC. This merger will be an arduous process due to several contributing factors but will greatly simplify operations once completed.
Mr. Spence brings over 40 years of rental real estate ability, knowledge and experience. This exciting time of expansion to meet the current unprecedented demand due to the growth of the Marshall University School of Pharmacy will surely require these skills, in addition to those of the company’s entire management team.
